ACA is a 12 Step Program Focusing on Emotional Sobriety
We were all profoundly affected by the dysfunction in our families of origin, whether alcohol was present in the home or not. Consequently, we developed a set of "Laundry List" Traits that helped us survive that experience. These traits may have been adaptive at the time, but have now come to substantially disrupt our lives.
The ACA beginner handbook - "A New Hope" - slowly helps to bring participants out of isolation through a predictable, structured, drop-in meeting framework. This approach allows you to engage with the program resources incrementally with less likelihood of becoming overwhelmed. You can miss weeks, attending at your own pace, and still feel supported as you learn what it means to "work a program."
The handbook was created by a group of ACA Members located in Southwest Florida as a tool for a new local meeting specifically for beginners. The workbook introduces material that can be used to support and guide those attending this meeting. While there is no single path to healing the effects of childhood trauma, through ACA, they have created what they feel is a solid initial draft of a clear, concise, comprehensive ACA program overview.
